Your hostess is a designer, working with artists and architects. Anchor Yard had previously been in the hands of a lithographic printer, who’d owned it for forty years. When redesigning her new home, she blended old with new – to brilliant effect. She has a young son, and loves her local area, which remains a happening artistic hotbed.
Look around you
Don’t be deceived by the quaintness of the cobbled street, for surprises wait behind the front door. For a start, the reception room might be the coolest office space ever, with exposed brickwork, modern artwork and a desk that’s shiny in the deepest black. Nip up to the gigantic sitting room on the second floor, and get ready to gasp. Skylights and floor to ceiling windows flood the whole space with light, and you’ve a jaw-dropping view of rooftops and the spire of St Luke.
A blue heritage plaque announces that Gavin Turk, celebrated YBA, once worked here, and he wouldn’t have lacked for inspiration. Plunge into a white sofa and flick on the projector, or whip something up in the generously dimensioned kitchen.
You’ve a dining table beneath the skylights, or dine by moonlight on the sleek roof terrace. The bedrooms are worth more than a glance, from the superbly designed double to the creative child’s single and eye-catching master with ensuite. And do check out the family bathroom, decked out with an infinity of our White Company toiletries – or so it seems from the fantastically mirrored walls…

Whitecross Street Market is so close you’ll probably sniff out its most delectable offerings before you leave the house. But save space for Clerkenwell’s celebrated eateries, including the Michelin-starred St John and Club Gascon. The Barbican is a one stop shop of art, theatre and music, while Shoreditch has shops of the pop-up variety, as well as achingly on-trend crowds. The tube from Old Street to Oxford Circus takes around fifteen minutes.
